What Happened When Adam Died

1 Thessalonians 5:23: And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are made up of three parts, spirit, soul and body. Many Biblical teachers have taught that our spirits are the non-material part of us that can communicate with God, be connected to Him and relate to Him. And our souls are the non-material part of us that relate to our material parts, our bodies and the world around us. None have communicated this truth to me better than my teacher, Horst Adler.

Genesis 2:17: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Genesis 5:5: And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

The souls and bodies of Adam and Eve did not die the day they ate the forbidden fruit. Something else died that day. That something was their spirits. Physical death is when our souls are separated from our bodies. Spiritual death is when we are separated from the living God. We cannot have a living connection with Him until our spirits are made alive.

So what died when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit? Their spirits. And what part of us passes from death to life and what part of us becomes born again? Our dead spirits. What we inherit from Adam and Eve are dead spirits disconnected from the living God and souls and bodies also disconnected from the living God. With a dead spirit, there is no connection with God to bring spiritual life to our souls and bodies. Everything spiritual is dependent upon our dead spirits being made alive. The living God is the only one who can accomplish that.

John 3:5: Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, (capital S) he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit (capital S) is spirit. (small s) 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

John 4:23: But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

We cannot worship God with a dead spirit. Nothing of spiritual value happens to or through a dead spirit. Everything of spiritual value happens through the Holy Spirit to and through our quickened spirits. The Holy Spirit does not work through a dead human spirit. When God regenerates our spirits the connection between God and our souls and bodies is reestablished. Contrasts between dead human spirits and living human spirits are all over the Bible. This truth explains many difficult passages in the Bible.

John 6:63: It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
